Stellazione (2018)
for four electric guitars, two electric basses, two pianos, and two percussionists [6:30]

Stellazione refers to the mathematical process of stellation, extending shapes into multiple dimensions, creating new geometric patterns or polyhedrons. In Italian, the term seems (to a foreigner’s ears) to evoke both stella (star) and azione (action). From sparse, pulsation textures, local patterns begin to emerge: regular repetitions created by delay lines in the guitars, or refracted rhythmic patterns in the percussion. Stellazione was equally inspired by the geometric mosaics of Ravenna, the city of its premiere, and the soundscapes of Daniel Lanois, particularly on Bob Dylan’s Oh Mercy: layers of tremolo guitars over piano chords, occasionally punches from the bass, high-resgister wisps of sustained synthesizers. Sonority, resonance, and atmosphere…
