This divided pickup technology has been used extensively in MIDI devices, to drive guitar synths, but my approach\u00a0works differently: I use the direct signal from each of the six magnets on the pickup.<\/span><\/p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"float:right; width:480px; height:360px; margin-left:10px; margin-bottom: 10px; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vLtQDo6Jum0?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">In Max, I then built a series of hexaphonic effects that are capable of applying different treatments to each string:\u00a0a polyrhythmic tremolo for instance, a six-voice wah-wah effect, an overdrive with different levels of distortion on different strings or a dynamic delay that transforms a strummed chord into an arpeggio or a fingerpicking pattern.\u00a0An automated\u00a0attack detector, applied to each string, allows a pedal-steel &#8220;fade in&#8221; to also be heard\u00a0polyphonically, as if each string has its own volume pedal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Most importantly, I use the hexaphonic pickup to turn the guitar into a flexible microtonal instrument. Using a phase vocoder, the pitch of each string can also be transposed independently, either statically, for &#8220;virtual retuning&#8221; or dynamically, for glissando effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Finally, each string can be independently spatialized as well, given its own position or, using IRCAM&#8217;s Spat system, its own 3-D trajectory.
