Organ<\/a>, a microtonal organin\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ffffff;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/31_equal_temperament\" target=\"_blank\">31-tone Equal Temperament<\/a>,\u00a0recently restored and installed in the Muziekgebouw aan \u2018t IJ in Amsterdam.The title makes reference to the two modes of determining pitches used in the piece\u2014those using the overtone series as a guide (the piece opens with the 7th and 49th partials, beautifully approximated by the Fokker organ, of a low G at around 49 Hz) and the combination of Huygens-Fokker scale steps\u201449 steps representing a mean-tone 12th, used throughout the piece.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"column\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"column\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p class=\"column\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">The goal is always to highlight the organ\u2019s unique tuning system with the intervals it best approximates: the just major third, the \u2018neutral\u2019 third (9\/11), the seventh partial\u2026 Later in the piece, arpeggiated \u2018spectral\u2019 chords (harmonic series with varying degrees of density and deviation) punctuate a diadic or chordal mid-register melody in an homage to Nancarrow\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"column\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/forumnet.ircam.fr\/?attachment_id=2243\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2243\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2243 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/forumnet.ircam.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/fokker-mac.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"256\" height=\"192\" \/><\/a>The Fokker Organ is also equipped with a MIDI in\/out, and can play prepared passages like a player piano or disklavier.\u00a0<em>Forty-nine, Forty-nine<\/em>\u00a0is entirely MIDI-controlled, \u2018performed\u2019 by connecting a laptop which plays the MIDI score to the organ.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><div class=\"column\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"column\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"column\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><em>Forty-nine, Forty-nine<\/em>\u00a0was composed entirely in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/recherche.ircam.fr\/equipes\/repmus\/OpenMusic\/user-doc\/DocFiles\/Documentation\/maquettes\/Maquettes.html\" target=\"_blank\">Maquette<\/a><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u00a0environment of OpenMusic,\u00a0then exported as a MIDI file to be played by the organ.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><img
