The moment of perception swells; the &#8216;fraction of <span class=\"il\">time<\/span>&#8216; expands&#8230; a gap opens between the <span class=\"il\">time<\/span> of the clock and neurobiological <span class=\"il\">time<\/span>&#8230; In such moments <span class=\"il\">we<\/span> get a glimpse of the splendor of eternal life, of unfading color, unerased sensation. But these dilations don&#8217;t last. What if they could?&#8221;<\/em> [Michael Clune, <i>Writing Against <span class=\"il\">Time<\/span><\/i>]<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><em>Writing\u00a0Against\u00a0Time<\/em>,\u00a0inspired by Micahel Clune&#8217;s book of the same name, is about\u00a0&#8220;stopping\u00a0time&#8221; &#8211; the sensation of suspension in an enveloping present, prolonging the\u00a0wonder and enchantment of a new aesthetic discovery. The piece unfolds as a long\u00a0single line, always pulling forward, resisting reference back to earlier moments. There is\u00a0repetition and variation, but no development &#8211; an emphasis instead on surface details\u00a0and transformations in color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">The quartet interacts with real-time\u00a0electronics &#8211; a circle of speakers enveloping the\u00a0audience, churning out a backdrop of spatialized and microtonally retuned\u00a0sounds.\u00a0Repeated patterns and hocketed rhythms create an intricate, colorful\u00a0collage\u00a0that draws on a range of disparate sources: an early\u00a0Buddy\u00a0Holly\u00a0record, East\u00a0African xylophone grooves,\u00a0New Orleans carnival beats, strummed steel strings, and\u00a0clanging pots from the streets of Istanbul during the Taksim protests\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><em>Writing\u00a0Against\u00a0Time\u00a0<\/em>was written in conjunction with the Julius F. Jezek Prize, underwritten by\u00a0the Harry and Alice Eiler Foundation.
