Weary of Time<\/span><\/h4>\n<div class=\"column\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><em>Sunflower Suite<\/em> takes Van Gogh\u2019s \u2018canvas all in yellow,\u2019 his still life of fifteen sunflowers in London\u2019s National Gallery, as a starting point for exploring the spectrum of shades of character associated with the color yellow: bright, loud, stark, bold, vibrant, irreverent, capricious, revelatory, blinding, redemptive&#8230; The image of the sunflower recurs throughout, refracted and transformed through the eyes of \u2018visionary\u2019 poets such as Dickinson, Ginsberg, Lorca, and Blake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Imagine the prologue as a painter sifting through a bag of paints, considering various colors (the fragments of unrelated music that emerge from interspersed noise) before ultimately settling on yellow with the explosion that opens \u2018A Fifth of a Miracle.\u2019 The clarinet delivers the manic \u2018sermon\u2019 of Allen Ginsberg\u2019s \u2018Sunflower Sutra\u2019 in the second movement, where a four note chord (D-E-B-C#), analagous to the dead sunflower that triggers Ginsberg\u2019s revelation, is progressively invigorated until the movement\u2019s frenetic climax.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2018Pile the bananas on planks\u2019 is Wallace Stevens\u2019 rallying cry for raw, unmediated expression in American art; a mocking waltz is interrupted by irreverent, quasi-tropical interjections and a bass clarinet cadenza. A mischievous piccolo paints blossom patterns in fireworks in the dancing \u2018\u00a1Girasol de Fuego!\u2019, while a muted cello sings a yearning wordless setting of William Blake\u2019s transcendental \u2018Ah, Sunflower!\u2019 to close the suite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><em>Sunflower Suite<\/em> was written for the Philharmonia Orchestra\u2019s Music of Today series and was premiered in the summer of 2003, the sesquicentennial of Van Gogh\u2019s birth, by members of the Philharmonia Orchestra on June 19th at London\u2019s Royal Festival Hall and repeated June 20th at the National Gallery.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sunflower Suite\u00a0(2003) for\u00a0sextet (flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, percussion) [14:30] Prologue: Nature rarer uses yellow I.
