It is also contrasted with the present. \u2014Wikipedia entry on &#8216;Past&#8217;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><em>The direction of Time, the ardis of Time, one-way Time, here is something that looks useful to me one moment, but dwindles the next to the level of an illusion obscurely related to the mysteries of growth and gravitation. \u2014Vladimir Nabokov,<\/em> Ada, or Ardor<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8220;U\u0308<a href=\"http:\/\/christophertrapani.com\/wordpresssite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/imm012_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-565 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/christophertrapani.com\/wordpresssite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/imm012_1.jpg\" alt=\"imm012_1\" width=\"380\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"http:\/\/christophertrapani.com\/wordpresssite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/imm012_1.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/christophertrapani.com\/wordpresssite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/imm012_1-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/christophertrapani.com\/wordpresssite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/imm012_1-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px\" \/><\/a>sku\u0308dar: a mechanism not for forgetting, but for conquering memory. A fantasy about scrambling chronology. A view across the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Bosphorus to Time&#8217;s Arrow, fracturing memory\u2013escaping the past \/ repeating the past \/ filtering the past.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">I wrote this note and the opening clarinet melody in my sketchbook during an August 2005 visit to\u00a0Istanbul, sitting in a teahouse on the Asian shore. Less than a week later my hometown of New Orleans would be nearly demolished, and my sense of time, distance, and memory would change forever. Three years down the line, I found myself living in Istanbul full-time, with a view of U\u0308sku\u0308dar (today, a modest neighborhood on the Anatolian side of the city) from my balcony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">The process of composing U\u0308sku\u0308dar in Istanbul in 2008 turned in<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-578 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/christophertrapani.com\/wordpresssite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/100_1212.jpg\" alt=\"100_1212\" width=\"415\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"http:\/\/christophertrapani.com\/wordpresssite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/100_1212.jpg 3072w, http:\/\/christophertrapani.com\/wordpresssite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/100_1212-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/christophertrapani.com\/wordpresssite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/100_1212-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 415px) 100vw, 415px\" \/>to a search for the piece I would have composed earlier, before the exoticism began to fade: a sort of Westerner&#8217;s fantasy of looking back onto Europe and getting a distanced outsider&#8217;s perspective on the past for the first time\u2013a meditation on linear and cyclical conceptions of time, with a postlude that drags it into the present- day. In its title and choice of instrumentation, the piece is also an hommage to the distinctive exoticism of Claude Vivier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">U\u0308sku\u0308dar was commissioned by the Gaudeamus Foundation in conjunction with the 2007 Gaudeamus Prize, and was composed with support from the J. William Fulbright scholarship program.
